land of the lost

J*Davey - Land of the Lost Mixtape.mp3
Not new to the scene, The duo of singer Jack Davey and soundboard wiz and Prince scholar Brook D'Leau fuse together an invigorating mix of what they like to describe as "genre X," a blend of electronica, rock, hip hop, jazz, pop and disco.
Los Angeles-based Jack and Brook met in high school through a mutual friend and they quickly discovered they had similar taste in music. Jack is mostly influenced by classic jazz and late '70s fusion, while Brook has an interest in sounds from the '80s like Prince, Talking Heads and the Police.
The group was signed to the rock division of Warner earlier this year, which will help them not to be molded into another hip hop-oriented clone. J*Davey is currently working on their debut that is scheduled to be in stores in 2008
The group put out a mixtape of some of their demos compiled by DJ Lindsey to start a grassroots buzz for the band. This mixtape is in addition to other tracks and albums that have been floating around the net

Mono - it was dead on!!
Last Weekend was fantastic. Belfast is a wondeful city and everyone was amazing. My friends Sean and Andrew, their friends and Kathy D were just wonderful people all around. Had a dinner and dance with Miss Diamond and we had a great laugh and conversation and lil darlin can get down (until the last song!!!). I am looking forward to coming back there in December for a visit and to play a few more. They know how to still have a good time!!!

Unfortunately the recording of my set is fucked so Im not sharing it but in fact I think it went rather well.
Here is Kathy Diamonds live set
and of course there is Seany boy, one half of the famed kings of belfast ;)

Candie Payne

In 2006, following five years of writing, recording, singing and touring, Liverpool's Candie Payne was still having trouble finding a manager: 'No one was interested because it was still all about finding the new Arctic Monkeys.' Now, with a relatively successful album, I Wish I Could Have Loved You More, under her belt and a new Mark Ronson-produced single slated for October, things are looking up. 'People have started listening ,' she says with exaggerated disbelief. 'Finally!'
She insists on 'a clean sound', has banned backing vocals and says her pet hate is 'over-singing'. She is inspired by Sixties soul singers who 'sing straight', like Minnie Riperton and Roberta Flack. Payne is wary of over-glossing her image, which she carefully balances between 'pop' (perfect hair and nails) and 'noir' (she jauntily sports a trilby).
Her brothers are both players on the indie music scene. Sean is the drummer for the Zutons and Howie is the former lead-man of Liverpool band the Stands. She had always planned to be an illustrator but, feeling lost at art college, began to sing with her then boyfriend's band, Tramp Attack. She then met Simon Dine, who now writes her music: 'I only started writing lyrics so that I'd have some words to sing.' ES

Donnie - The Daily News
I am addicted to this album. An instant classic.

'Four years ago, Donnie’s The Colored Section was the most provocative soul-fueled social commentary since the days when Curtis Mayfield, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder and Donny Hathaway routinely offered biting analyses of current events. These days, the real daily news continues to give him plenty to talk about, which he does with wit and insight. It’s nice to be reminded that there is more to R&B than preening and pickup lines.'
'No news topic is too taboo on The Daily News, the remarkable follow-up to Donnie’s debut, The Colored Section (2002). A dry-eyed realism shapes this material. Though Donnie’s observations are as sharp and disturbing as the barbed wire pictured in the accompanying booklet, he makes listening to the not-so-good news palatable.'

Cover art
I'm going to geek out for a few...
I have been on this massive album cover project for my music collection and its proved to be a mission. Finding the (best) album art and including it the mp3s does take a bit of time. Here are some of the tools that I use to get the best quality jpgs in the mp3 tags.
First, you need to get a program to incorporate the jpg files into the mp3 tags. I use Tag & Rename. If you have a Mac, the mix of itunes and Coverscout work.
It seems the status quo of acceptable album art size is 600X600. If you have your songs tagged properly, retrieving the cover art from itunes should be fairly painless. However, only by using Coverscout are you able to transfer the album art from the itunes library into the mp3 tag. This is important because if your itunes library is wiped, i would assume that all your album art is also, because its not your mp3 tag.
What does this mean for pc users like me? We are fucked...(unless someone knows of something)
Alas, here are the sites where I usually find 600X600+ size cover art for my mp3s, and then incorporate the file into the mp3 tag using Tag & Rename:
Discogs (Best!!!)
Juno Records (Recent Releases)
Juno Downloads (Recent Releases)
Amazon
Good Groove (for amazing quality disco covers)

dj gig
I'm very happy that I finally have my first true public dj gig, outside of party, opening for Kathy Diamond (live) and Maurice Fulton (who produced her album). I guess its a late start to have your first set in public at 29, but I'm glad I held out because I think starting off in some unattended club or bar years ago, playing to an empty crowd or having to play the same type of music all night would have gotten old real quick. Its truly an honor to be able to play anything that I choose, especially because my tastes are everywhere.
I'm playing at my friends club, Mono, which I have been hearing about from him for a few years now. They have been bringing people such as Idjut Boys, Todd Terje, Reverso 68, Yam Who etc. all parties I would have loved to go to. So when I finally heard that Kathy Diamond was going to perform live, I could not resist the opportunity to pay mono a visit. After saying I would love to come that weekend to see her, I was invited to open the night for her!!
I'm still jumping around with excitement at the opportunity and already picking out the songs. Yeh It is only opening but still, have to do it right.
